Steps
Cut the frame
Cut two uprights ~6 ft and two or three horizontal rails to width (~24–36"). Assemble a flat rectangle; square the corners and screw through rails into uprights.
- Build on a driveway so the frame stays flat.
- Predrill near ends to limit splits in thin stock.
Add lattice
Space 1x2 strips ~4–6" apart vertically or in a diamond pattern. Screw each crossing. Keep gaps large enough for vines to weave.
- A spacer block speeds even gaps.
- Sand splinters before plants grow through.
Brace and finish edges
Add a diagonal brace on the back if freestanding. Ease sharp edges. Leave cedar unfinished or oil lightly.
- Skip thick film finishes outdoors — they peel.
- Brace opposite the prevailing wind.
Install in the garden
Stake uprights at least 12" into soil or lag to a fence post. Check plumb. Train plants loosely with soft ties — do not strangle stems.
- Call 811 before deep digging near utilities.
- Re-check stakes after the first big storm.
