Steps
Mill and cut parts
Cut four legs (~24–26"), aprons for a ~16" x 18" footprint, a top with slight overhang, and a lower shelf. Mark legs as LF/RF/LR/RR.
- Cut legs from the straightest stock.
- Leave tops oversized and flush-trim after glue if needed.
Assemble the base
Join aprons to legs with pocket screws/dowels and glue. Check for square and equal diagonals. Add shelf supports or dados, then fit the shelf.
- Assemble on a flat bench.
- Clamp without twisting the legs out of wind.
Attach the top
Sand the base. Attach the top with figure-8 fasteners, Z-clips, or elongated screw holes so solid wood can move seasonally.
- Never glue a solid top tightly all around — it can split.
- Center overhangs by measuring from each apron.
Finish
Ease edges, sand to 180–220, and apply finish. Level feet with felt pads.
- Finish the underside of the top too to balance moisture.
- No drawer or hardware is needed — keep it simple.
