Simple Outdoor Bench
Difficulty: Intermediate · Estimated time: about 5 hr of hands-on work, not counting glue and finish drying or cure time
A sturdy patio bench from 2x lumber with bolted legs — no fancy joinery.
Build a weather-ready bench using pressure-treated or cedar 2x4/2x6 stock. Through-bolted legs and a slatted seat. Intermediate mainly for size, square assembly, and outdoor fastening — still hobbyist-safe with basic power tools.
Materials
- 2x4 lumber (cedar, or PT rated for ground contact) — 6 @ 8 ft (Choose straight stock)
- 2x6 for seat slats (optional upgrade) — 2 @ 8 ft (Or use 2x4 slats)
- Carriage bolts with washers/nuts — 8 @ 3/8" x 3-1/2"
- Exterior screws — 1-1/4 lb @ 2-1/2"
- Exterior finish or leave cedar raw — 1 qt if finishing
Tools
- Miter or circular saw
- Drill/driver and 3/8" bit
- Square, tape, pencil
- Wrenches for bolts
- Clamps (optional)
- Sander (optional)
- Safety glasses and hearing protection
Safety: Power tools and finishes can cause serious injury. Read and follow every tool and product manual, use guards and push sticks, wear eye and hearing protection, and work in a ventilated area. Steps
Cut the parts
Typical size: seat 48" long, height ~17". Cut four legs, two long aprons, two short aprons/ends, and 4–5 seat slats. Label everything. Seal fresh PT end cuts if using treated lumber.
- Crown boards so crowns oppose on paired parts.
- Cut one leg and use it as a pattern for the rest.
Build the leg assemblies
Assemble two end frames: legs + short apron, square and bolted or screwed. Add a lower stretcher between legs on each end for racking resistance. Predrill for bolts; use washers under nuts.
- Assemble on a flat driveway or sheet of plywood.
- Do not overtighten bolts into soft wood — snug plus a quarter turn.
Join the base and add seat
Connect end frames with long aprons. Check diagonal measurements for square. Screw seat slats with ~3/8" gaps for drainage; countersink heads slightly. Ease all sharp edges.
- A spacer stick keeps slat gaps consistent.
- Sit and rock-test before finish — fix wobble by planing a high foot or adding an adjustable glider.
Finish and place outdoors
Sand splinters smooth. Apply exterior oil/stain if desired. Place on level ground; use pads under feet on soft soil. Recheck bolts after the first season.
- PT lumber must dry before many film finishes stick.
- Store under cover in harsh winters to extend life.
