Difficulty: Beginner · Estimated time: about 2 hr 20 min of hands-on work, not counting glue and finish drying or cure time

Tools

Safety: Power tools and finishes can cause serious injury. Read and follow every tool and product manual, use guards and push sticks, wear eye and hearing protection, and work in a ventilated area. These plans are for general information; check measurements and your own skill before cutting. You build at your own risk, and Handy at Home is not liable for injury or damage. See the Terms.

Steps

  1. Cut legs and rails

Cut four short legs (~12–14"), long rails for width (~28–32"), and short end rails. Cut slats for two shelves.

    • Measure your largest boots for depth (~12").
    • Keep paired parts cut together for matching length.
  2. Build two shelf frames

Assemble two rectangles; screw slats across with ~1/2" gaps. Check square.

    • Spacer sticks keep gaps even.
    • Predrill slat ends.
  3. Attach legs

Screw legs to the shelf frames at two heights. Ensure the rack sits flat without rocking.

    • Assemble upside down on a flat floor.
    • Add cross braces on ends if it racks.
  4. Sand and place

Sand splinters, finish if desired, and place on a rug or floor protector. Do not stand on it — it is not a step stool.

    • Felt pads help on hardwood floors.
    • Keep weight as shoe storage only.
