Safety: Power tools and finishes can cause serious injury. Read and follow every tool and product manual, use guards and push sticks, wear eye and hearing protection, and work in a ventilated area. These plans are for general information; check measurements and your own skill before cutting. You build at your own risk, and Handy at Home is not liable for injury or damage. See the Terms.

Steps

  1. Cut the box parts

Cut two ends, two sides, and a bottom for a tote about 16–20" long and 8–10" wide. Cut ends taller if you want a raised handle. Label inside faces.

    • Keep end grain of the bottom covered by sides for a cleaner look.
    • Dry-fit before drilling.
  2. Drill handle holes and assemble

Drill centered 1" holes near the top of both ends for the dowel. Glue/screw sides to ends, then attach the bottom. Keep the box square.

    • Predrill to avoid splitting pine ends.
    • A square across the diagonals catches racking early.
  3. Fit the dowel handle

Cut the dowel to length with a little overhang. Glue into the holes; optional screw from the top edge into the dowel. Sand the grip smooth.

    • Chamfer dowel ends for comfort.
    • Do not hang the tote by the dowel until glue cures.
  4. Finish and load

Ease all edges, sand, and finish if desired. Load moderately — soft pine handles abuse but overloaded totes rack.

    • A light oil finish is enough for shop use.
    • Add a divider later if tools rattle.
